The Residence of Bukovynian Metropolitans
Today you are offered to visit the former Residence of Bukovynian metropolitans - the pearl of Chernivtsi and the masterpiece of the famous Czech architect Joseph Hlavka. The architectural ensemble comprises three main buildings and the beautiful square. The central edifice with a chapel was formerly the residence of the Metropolitan, the side edifices served as the seminary and the house for guests. The church with its domes and towers contributes to the magnificence of the ensemble.
The erection of the edifice became an outstanding event for Chernivtsi. Numerous brick-works and new quarries were opened on the outskirts of the city, famous architects from Vienna, Prague and other Austro-Hungarian cities were invited. The most prominent among them were Karl Jobst and Karl Svoboda who accomplished interior decoration.
Nowadays three departments of Chernivtsi National University function in the residence. Every year plenty of tourists come here to enjoy this architectural miracle that combines traditional Byzantine style and local colouring. Today you yourself can feel its beauty.
