The Market of Domestic Crafts
Yaremche is a famous centre of the folk decorative applied arts and various trades. To make yourself sure of that you should visit a very interesting market of souvenirs and folk trades situated in an extremely picturesque place called Yaremche which is next to the famous waterfall "PROBIY"(Opening the way). Another souvenir market you can find a bit further to the centre of the town. "Probiy" market has existed for over 30 years and has 70 shops. Wooden articles, pictures, woolen blankets, including so called "lizhnyks ", decorative rugs, fabrics, embroidered towels and a lot of other interesting articles can be bought at the souvenir market.
In olden times there were not so many towns in Halychyna and the Carpathian villages were rather remote from them, so the peasants had to learn to make clothes, utensils and decorative articles themselves. The abundance of forests caused the wood processing. The amazing carved articles, wooden barrels and church attributes made from the local wood and nicely decorated with metal, pearls and grinded (filed) stones are sure to attract the tourists' attention.
The soil, rich in clay, is a suitable material for the pottery and coloured ceramics. The visitors are offered different painted plates and vases decorated with the scenes of peasants' life, mythological scenes, the animal world and nature, all being performed in yellow, green and brown colours on a light groundwork. Coloured textile fabrics also belong to the Ukrainian folk art.
Almost every family have their clothes masterly decorated with embroidery. Interiors of the houses are also decorated with woven carpets, embroidered table clothes and lizhnyks.
Leather articles made with the use of hot and cold pressing technologies and often decorated with different metal items, sometimes with stones also, are considered to be of great value.
